Just beyond the brick facade of a 120-year-old storefront in Lakeview, Chicago, lies the heart and soul of the yuacollab studio. We took full advantage of this opportunity to showcase our design aesthetic and experiment with new construction techniques, converting this ordinary, outdated IT office into a collaborative workspace. Even though the century-old structure presented many challenges and unforeseen conditions, it allowed us to create a special place that reflects our values, capabilities, and unique identity.

Our team challenged ourselves to design around people. We rearranged the entire space with a focus on collaboration and wellness. The openness of the workspace is amplified by daylight coming through the south-facing clerestory, fostering a bright and airy work area. Automated shades are concealed within hidden pockets when not in use, promoting a healthy studio environment through an integrated control system.

The conference area invites conversation with abundant direct sunlight, an extra window nook for sitting, and a beautiful epoxy table designed and built by a local, skilled craftswoman. A custom-fabricated hidden curved door, a result of our own curiosity, adds to the cohesive balance of playful yet subtle design. It has the added benefit of hiding office supplies, lighting controls, and other mechanical items – minimizing the visual clutter inherent to any working environment. Toward the back of the space, a custom-built kitchenette complements the office’s functional style with minimalistic cabinetry and hidden appliances. More than just a place to prepare coffee, it provides a place for quiet contemplation before the day’s work begins.

With intention and precision, we delivered a clean-lined, flexible, and healthy space beyond the beaten bricks that the yuacollab team calls home. This transformation was not just a renovation but an embodiment of our philosophy. Every material, every hidden detail, and every carefully considered decision speaks to our belief that design should be both beautiful and purposeful. Beyond the brick facade, we have created more than just an office; we have built a culture that fosters collaboration, creativity, and well-being. This space is a testament to what we stand for – where thoughtful design meets technical expertise and where we continue to push the boundaries of possibility.
