Reimaging the student dining experience – Vibrant, sustainable, and welcoming
Well-used facilities in need of modernization are a common challenge in universities across the country. The Illinois Street Residence (ISR) Dining Hall + Student Center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, originally constructed in 1964, was no exception. Students had no space to gather or study, there was not enough seating at peak dining times, and structural elements, including ventilation, were degrading. Due to its dated appearance and subpar food quality, many students felt they had no choice but to dine elsewhere. Before founding Yu & Associates Collaborative, Wei Yu played a key role in addressing these challenges through the redevelopment of this dining hall while working at Booth Hansen. The completed building now provides an inviting community space that promotes sustainability, unique dining options, and an enriching student experience.
The exterior of the building is designed to integrate seamlessly with its surroundings. A custom-fabricated curtain wall and cast stone façade system, complemented by large rooftop skylights, creates a bright and inviting atmosphere for gathering and socializing. The green roof improves air quality and energy efficiency while providing an appealing aesthetic to the surrounding buildings. Sunken entrances remain accessible while minimizing disruption to pedestrian traffic.
Students enter through the building’s “Main Street” at the lower level, where they can access study rooms and open seating for gathering and relaxing. Open stairwells lead up to the first floor, where the spacious dining hall now has a capacity for nearly double the number of people. Visitors can choose from nine distinct micro-restaurants, including options like a salad bar, pizza/pasta, and barbecue, each offering unique cuisines and dining experiences. Each venue’s custom design adds to the overall ambiance. The hall also has a demonstration kitchen where students can learn culinary skills from professional chefs.
A student’s overall experience at a university, including access to dining facilities and study rooms, plays a critical role in shaping their well-being, academic success, and sense of belonging. The ISR Dining Hall + Student Center now serves as a welcoming hub for social interaction and ensures students can focus on their studies without concern about finding convenient and quality meals. Offering healthy options and addressing dietary needs for all creates an inclusive environment where all students and faculty feel cared for. University dining halls don’t always have a good reputation, as evidenced by the former conditions of the space. Through thoughtful design choices that address the needs of students, staff, and the greater community, the ISR dining experience has been transformed from ordinary to one that students eagerly anticipate.
