Once a thriving part of the American economy, many malls across the country have struggled with the rise of e-commerce, overbuilding, and the decline of large anchor stores, among other challenges. The pandemic only worsened these issues, resulting in temporary closures at malls like North Riverside Park Mall, just ten miles west of downtown Chicago. Joe’s Boots, located in the heart of the mall, first opened its doors in 2018, offering an extensive selection of authentic western boots, hats, belts, and clothing for the entire family. Despite the increasing challenges, the owners saw an opportunity to grow during the closure. In collaboration with yuacollab, Joe’s Boots expanded into a recently vacated adjacent space with a refreshed store design to meet growing demand.
Tall glass panes stretch across the front of the store and blend with the entrance, inviting curious mall visitors to stop in and take a closer look. The transparency also benefits shoppers inside the store, contributing to a bright, open atmosphere that feels spacious and connected to the rest of the mall. The warm, rustic interior offers shoppers a memorable experience and creates a unique contrast to the mall’s more modern aesthetic. The expanded space allows for wider walkways and less display congestion, ensuring a relaxed and casual shopping experience while providing room for future growth. This improved layout also makes it easier for customers to browse a wider selection of products and discover new favorites.
Joe’s Boots’ expansion provides their customers with an enhanced shopping experience focused on comfort, convenience, and a stronger connection to the brand’s western roots. Preceding the mall’s broader vision to modernize and diversify, the efforts of the owners have proven to be a fortuitous investment. The interior of the mall underwent remodeling in 2024 and now seeks redevelopment of the entire property toward a more mixed-use and community-centered destination, including green spaces for entertainment and a residential component. Joe’s Boots is well-positioned to remain a familiar fixture as the mall looks toward the future and reclaims its role as a vibrant community hub in an evolving retail landscape.
